Student debt is the 21st Century scourge of the millennial. I feel that the elimination of student debt is probably the single most important criteria for unleashing the creative force of our younger generation. A major vehicle for accomplishing this goal would be for the millennial to adopt an economically viable side hustle and get rid of this burden that they bear.
The Art of the Side Hustle
A side hustle, by definition, is any type of employment undertaken, in addition to one’s full time employment. For my purposes, when writing this post, it is any way to supplement your present income.
I really don’t know anyone that couldn’t use some extra cash in our present economic climate. I realize there are people that don’t need or look for extra income, but I am not acquainted with such people.
When I sat down to write this post, I thought of my nieces and nephews, who are burdened with a mountain of debt from , I consider predatory, education loans. They will be well into their middle age before they are able to climb out this financial hole. They have put off marriage, home buying, and in many cases, any type of major purchase.
To me, it behoves us all to offer any help that we can to assist this generation in their efforts to climb out of debt, if not for them, for the economic well-being of our country. The more spending power they possess, the more cars and homes that can be purchased, and the more money pumped back into our economy.
This was my main motivation for writing this post on the Art of The Side Hustle
Side Hustle 101
The first question that comes to mind is “where do I find a side hustle?” Side hustles exist almost anywhere that we look. Uber is a classic example of a side hustle. I have read of people paying off student loans, each month, by driving a couple of days a week. Whether it be eBay, yard sale hunting, blogging, freelance writing, you name it. Whatever you enjoy doing and can turn a dollar doing it, is the best side hustle that I know of.
Many people, that I am acquainted with, enjoy freelance writing for other budding entrepreneurs. I have found that the more unique you can make it, the more that you will be able to create a side hustle that reflects you and your values.
Classic Side Hustles
Yankee Candle was started by a teenager. Another individual took this a little further by starting a candle making side hustle by watching YouTube. He had an idea, he said he didn’t know anything about candle making when he started out, but through YouTube videos and experimentation, he has built a successful side hustle.
How about poisonous toad removal? Now I definitely believe no one would have thought of this for a money-making side gig. This is a true business, run by a Florida woman, who saw a need, and developed a way to earn a side huslte income removing these pests for people.
Solving problems is the greatest source of inspiration, and determining a way to put it to good use, in a money-making fashion, will lead to an income generating side hustle.
Always be on the lookout for an opportunity to explore, experiment to see if a dollar can be turned, and don’t be afraid to invest in yourself. In most cases, it doesn’t take a lot of cash, just sweat equity and a little brain power.
Opportunities exist everywhere and I don’t feel that there ever has been a better time to get out there and work for yourself. I have always believed that there is no security in life except in ourselves. The great slogan, “if it is to be, it is up to me”, is as meaningful today as it ever was.
So in the words of American Breed, “Bend me, shape me, anyway that you want, you have the power to turn on the light”.
So turn on your light, discover your passion, turn it in to a side hustle, earn some money, pair down that student debt, and just live a little.
If you get a moment in your side hustling, drop me a line and let me know what you have got yourself into, I would appreciate hearing from you,
Thank you for reading this post and I hope that you have a great side hustling day.
